Usually the situation is this: someone wants to attend an event, discipline their exercise routine, or try something new but they block themselves with excuses, statements such as "I want to go to that party and interact with new people but I probably won't stay long so I might as well not go" or "I want to try morning yoga practice/running/swimming but it's too early and I don't like getting up in the morning". Before there has even been an experience there has already been a decision against it.
I'm a big believer in experiencing the world, experiencing life in its full breadth. Experiences are how we keep life fresh, awake, and alive. Experiences develop wisdom, humility, and strength of character. If you have something in mind you want to do, don't let your doubts talk you out of it. Here's what you have to do:
Show up no matter what. That's all. Decide you will show up all the time no matter what, don't wait until the last moment to make your decision because the mind will play tricks on you and you won't do it, and then you'll end up feeling like you missed out on something because you feel stuck in the same pattern of striving indecision, ultimately neglecting your intuition and deepest well-being.
Show up to the party, and then leave after five minutes if you want. Show up to the yoga class/gym, walk in, and if you don't want to do it, turn around and walk right out. Show up for your morning run, put on your running gear and really show up for it, and if you decide not to go for a run then take all your running gear off and go about your day. When you show up, there's no room to make judgments about the experience before you have it. Don't decide the outcome of the experience before you show up for it. Don't leave yourself hanging all the time, never knowing if you will or will not decide to do that thing. Show up for it every time no matter what. Once you've shown up, decide. Run for two minutes, sit on your meditation cushion, practice five sun salutations, talk to no one at the party then leave.
Make a commitment to yourself to show up for the experience, and watch your world expand out farther than you ever believed it could.
Have you made it your mantra to show up no matter what? I'd love to hear about your experience!
